Daina Faye Martin Purvis, age 84, of Eminence passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. Daina was a Home Economics teacher for 27 years at Eminence Independent Schools. She taught generations of students the intricacies of sewing and cooking, and the life skills that she hoped would make them successful adults, all while providing gentle and compassionate support to all students who needed it. Daina was a 1960 high school graduate from Garrett High School. She then attended Alice Lloyd College and continued on to Eastern Kentucky University to complete her teaching degree. It was at Eastern that Daina met her husband of 61 years, Billy Ray. They shared a love of cats, yard work, and visiting the Biltmore Estate. Daina honed her quality control expertise by consistently guiding Bill towards the right way to do things (all things, all the time according to Bill). Daina was a doting and loving aunt, and often a second mother, to her gaggle of nieces and nephews, as well as all of the greats and great-greats that followed. She loved doing crafts and puzzles and was quite the pack rat when it came to things that "might come in handy some day." However, her biggest love was mowing, which she would do as often as possible, even at times when the yard really didn't need it. She was also a valiant fighter of weeds and fallen leaves, allowing none to sully her well groomed lawn. Daina was a member of the Eminence Baptist Church and an active member of the Hospitality Committee for many years with that penchant for hospitality extended to her everyday life. Daina absolutely loved visiting with people. She could talk to anybody for hours, with wry humor and a remarkable ability to be both sassy and sweet at the same time.

Daina was preceded in death by her parents, Garland and Nora Pratt Martin; her siblings Daphne Moore, Tommy Martin, Ike Martin, Glema Moore, June Martin, Joan Duff, and Gaylord Martin; nephews Dwayne Moore and Travis Martin; and nieces Sheri Gayle Martin and Ruth Ann Moore. She is survived by brothers-in-law, Budge Moore and Willie Duff; sisters-in-law, Evelene Martin and Olive Martin; her nieces Leslie, Brandie, Dee Dee, Beverly, Anita, Allison, and Shauna; and nephews Anthony, Dan, Ben, John, Frank, Jeff, Rondale, Jamie, Rodney, and Kenton, along with their respective partners, several great and great-great nieces and nephews; a multitude of friends, and the caregivers at Visiting Angels and The Pinnacle who loved her like family.
