Gayle R. Mayhugh

Gayle Robin Mayhugh, born January 30, 1954, in the original Baptist Hospital in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2026 leaving behind a life filled with creativity, love, and the simple joys she cherished.

Gayle grew up in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where she graduated from Elizabethtown High School. She later moved to Richmond, Kentucky, to attend Eastern Kentucky University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design. After college, Gayle lived in Louisville for several years before settling in Shelbyville, Kentucky, where she made her home for 25 years. In 2016, she relocated to Smithfield, Kentucky, where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Gayle had a lifelong appreciation for creativity and beauty. She loved gardening, painting, music, and cooking. She found joy in creating things, caring for her garden, listening to music, and preparing meals for the people she loved. Her degree in Interior Design reflected the creative spirit that remained a part of her throughout her life.

Gayle is survived by her son, Reid Shober, and her beloved golden retriever, Kadee, who was a cherished companion and an important part of her life. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Ann Jones, and her father, Robert Lee Mayhugh.

Gayle will be remembered for her creative spirit, her love of gardening and the arts, and the many interests that brought meaning and enjoyment to her life. Her memory will live on through her son, Kadee, and all the people, places, and moments that were part of the life she built.

Graveside service will be 11 AM Thursday, September 24, 2026 at Smithfield Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children’s Hosptial.
