Harry Edwin Mitchell

Harry Edwin Mitchell, age 91 passed from this life to be with his Lord and Savior on July 8, 2026. Mr. Mitchell was born on November 3rd, 1934, and was a long-time resident of New Castle, Kentucky.

He graduated from Henry Central High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Georgetown College. He was employed as a teacher at Garth High School in Georgetown Kentucky before being offered a job in the Henry County School System wherein he taught English and other courses. He was best known for teaching choral music and co-directing popular high school musicals over the course of his 35-year career. During that same time, he taught head start and adult education classes. After retirement, he continued as a substitute teacher for another 10 years.

Mr. Mitchell served his community as a board member on the New Castle Cemetery Board for more than 50 years and served on the New Castle city council for many years. He also volunteered with the local Meals on Wheels program.

Mr. Mitchell was a faithful and active member of the New Castle Methodist Church where he directed the choir and played piano for the services for decades.

Sought after for his exceptional musical skills, Mr. Mitchell played for horse shows, weddings, funerals, and many other events throughout his life.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Elizabeth “Liz” Mitchell of New Castle, son, Mark Edwin Mitchell of Lexington, cousin, Mary Alice Raymer of New Castle, and many additional cousins, nephews, and nieces whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah G. Dutton Arnold and step-father Charlie Ed Arnold as well as his grandparents Mini and George Dutton.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, at Prewitt Funeral Home in New Castle, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2026, at New Caste Methodist Church and officiated by Rev. Dan Mattingly, pastor of New Castle Methodist Church.
